About Me
My name is Lora Hatch, and I live in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.
I began making jewellery after watching a television program where someone was making very simple charm-on-a-cord type jewellery. After doing a little research online, I discovered wire wrapping, and since I was already twisting wire in safety applications as an aircraft mechanic, I decided to experiment.
After some time, and a lot of practice, my wire wrapped jewellery was on display at Blueprints Jewelry Design Studio, and I received many requests for custom work. I've led workshops in association with the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery in North Bay and I have taught wire wrapping classes at Blueprints Studio.
Over the years, I’ve been able to add many new skills to my repertoire, such as soldering, metalsmithing, fold forming and lapidary. This has allowed me to expand my horizons in design. I think my jewellery has come a long way since I first started, and I’m looking forward to going further still.
My creative ideas come from things that I see; anything from a piece of jewellery in a magazine to the shape of a piece of driftwood on a beach. I always start a piece with an idea of how it will look, but it seldom ends up that way. The process of creating something almost always suggests new ideas, and I try to keep myself open to new possibilities. I feel that one of the most important things to my work, is that there is no “mass production” feel; every piece is hand-crafted and unique.
